Today in History, July 28th

1540 — It's a busy day for King Henry VIII. First he has Thomas Cromwell beheaded on charges of treason, because Cromwell hooked him up with his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, who Henry recently divorced on the grounds that she was previously married (in fact he simply wasn't attracted to her). Later that very day and just weeks after his divorce from Anne, Henry marries Catherine Howard, who he will later accuse of behaving immorally; he'll have her executed next year.

1914 - World War I begins: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia after it failed to meet the conditions of an ultimatum it set on July 23 following the killing of Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a Serbian assassin. This event leads to the outbreak of war.

1983 — Beach Boy Dennis Wilson marries the illegitimate daughter of his bandmate and enemy, Mike Love. Mutual restraining orders are later filed between Mike and Dennis.


1998 - Monica Lewinsky scandal: Ex-White House intern, Monica Lewinsky receives transactional immunity in exchange for her grand jury testimony concerning her relationship with US President Bill Clinton.
